Music On Hold And The Cabal

Playing music on hold (MoH) on your phone system whilst your caller is waiting to connect to the person or department they are after, or whilst someone ducks off to get some information, is a given these days, no-one wants to sit there and listen to silence, or nothing but the sound of keyboard tapping for 5 minutes.

Am I still connected? Did they forgot about me? Hrmm... is this thing still working? C'mon aren't you done yet?

Aussie Broadband SIP With FreePBX

Configuring FreePBX to use a VoIP provider is usually simple and quick, but sometimes there's always one of the bunch that wants to be different in how they expect you to configure your Trunk, and Aussie Broadband (affectionately known as Aussie, or ABB) is one of them.

With ABB doing things differently, you'll find the usual way of setting up a SIP trunk in FreePBX wont work, and you'll probably go half insane trying to work out why.

OnPrem SIP Trunking or Hosted PBX

To Host or not to Host - That is the question. Since the time SIP was commercialised, there has been a religious war raging, a fierce war with two staunch opponents - On-Prem (on-site) PBXers, and Hosted (off-site) PBXers.

There are benefits to both methods, it depends on what features you want, how many channels you need (in the world of VoIP, channels = lines), and how you are going to use the system.

CounterPaths Unacceptable Move

As the new decade rolls around, CounterPath, the developers of the popular VoIP softphone X-Lite, have decided to force everyone off and onto their Bria platform, previously for commercial users, but now for everyone, if you try to run X-lite, you'll get an error telling you its now End Of Life and to pop over to CounterPaths website and download Bria Solo Free which is free for home and non-commercial use, and claim is a direct replacement for X-Lite.

So you're probably wondering yeah, ummm, soooo, what the hell is wrong with that?

PBX Price Crazyness

In the age of NBN, where most POTS exchanges are being turned off (unless you're lucky enough to be in an NBN Wireless footprint where you get to keep your POTS line), SIP (VoIP) is your new and only option, so businesses are going to need to move towards SIP, and like traditional PBX's, that's where thing's get price crazy.

DoH Erodes Privacy

Mozilla, through firefox, is as of the end of September, going to be rolling out the forcing of DoH, or DNS over HTTPS for users of firefox, with the U.S.A first on the rollout. Google and others are also following, but in a very much limited way, where as firefox, will be blanket enabled.

So why is DoH so bad you ask?

DoH is currently at least, only paired with Cloudfares DNS services, this is fraught with danger, as Cloudfare does log requests and keeps them for about one month based on their original announcement, and even if they now claim they wont be logging when its fully operational, it's still very dangerous, because it's also centralising the Internet, sending all your DNS queries to one company, as you can imagine, doing so is incredibly dangerous and wrong!

As one who is a stickler for privacy (pretty evident if you've read a few of my posts), DoH must be pretty f'ked up for me to come out against it, Mozilla claims this is all about privacy, but that's something 90% of us already have.
